<p><span style="font-size:x-small;">Foliage has been developed in partnership with ScHARR, NLH and the West Midlands.  It builds on the APPLE programme modules.</p>
<p>Foliage is a brand new combined e-learning and face-to-face course designed for NHS library and information professionals who are skilled in literature searching and who wish to build on these skills to develop a high level of competency in clinical question answering. Based on the highly successful FOLIO series of courses, Foliage will provide you with a range of skills essential to developing evidence-based answers to clinical questions, such as filtering, appraising and digesting high-quality literature.</p>
<p>The course is open to anyone who is interested in developing these advanced searching skills. The course will also be useful to anyone who is developing a clinical question and answer service and for the provision of a clinical librarian role</p>
<p>Materials will be delivered via the &#8216;Moodle&#8217; virtual learning environment and ‘rest days’ are built in. This unique, flexible online format will enable participants to work at their own pace and to fit their learning around their working patterns. Face-to-face workshops will take place across the country to ensure they are as accessible as possible.</p>

<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">West Midlands Library Development Unit successfully obtained CILIP Seal of Recognition in June 2007.<span>  </span>All learning and development events and courses will now be accredited by the Seal.</font></p>
<p><b><font face="Arial"> </font></b><b><font face="Arial">APPLE and Knowledge Discovery.</font></b></p>
<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">It has been agreed by the group to postpone running APPLE and Knowledge Discovery until September 2008.<span>  </span>There are a couple reasons for this decision:</font></p>
<ul>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">There was low uptake (and drop-out!) of the modules over 2007</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">The searching modules and workshops will require revision once the new databases and NLH Search 2 is available in April.</font></li>
</ul>
<p><font face="Arial"></font></p>
<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">Owing to these factors, cost, and the fact that the Library Unit now has CILIP Seal of Recognition, the group is considering no longer accrediting either APPLE or Knowledge Discovery through the OCN.<span>  </span>The quality assurance systems of OCN will however still be applied to the development and delivery of the course.<span>  </span>By no longer accrediting with OCN we will be able to take a more flexible approach in the delivery of the two programmes, particularly allowing time between each module, the intensive nature of the course has often been a cause for candidates to drop out of the programme.</font></p>

<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">We received a 60% response to the TNA which we carried out over the summer.<span>  </span>The results of the TNA have been analysed used SPSS and we have lots of useful information regarding training needs.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial"></font></p>
<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">The Learning and Development Group analysed the results at our last meeting, 18<sup>th</sup> December.</font></p>
<p style="margin:0;" class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">We have identified a list of priorities which will be supported by range of different learning methods:</font></p>
<ul>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">Workshops – West Midlands, NLH, Other e.g. HLG</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">E-learning materials</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial">Signposting to resources</font></li>

<p>I attended an e-learning seminar last month.  The event included various presentations, covering the national picture, the strategy of the South West, and several case studies discussing good practice within individual trusts.</p>
<p>Libraries and librarians were mentioned in several of the presentations.  Librarians had been involved in e-learning projects in various ways: cataloguing e-learning objects, developing e-learning materials and providing drop-in sessions to learn about the managed learning environment used within a trust. </p>

<p><span><font face="Arial">The West Midlands Learning and Development Group have agreed that the framework is valuable to the development of West Midlands Health Library staff <span> </span>and can be used in a variety of ways:</font></span></p>
<p style="text-indent:-18pt;margin:0 0 0 36pt;" class="MsoBodyTextIndent3"><span style="font-family:Symbol;"><span>·<span style="font:7pt 'Times New Roman';">         </span></span></span><span><font face="Arial">To prepare an individual for their appraisal and personal development planning</font></span></p>
<p style="text-indent:-18pt;margin:0 0 0 36pt;" class="MsoBodyTextIndent3"><span style="font-family:Symbol;"><span>·<span style="font:7pt 'Times New Roman';">         </span></span></span><span><font face="Arial">To provide manager’s with information on development and career pathway opportunities to support staff appraisal</font></span></p>
<p style="text-indent:-18pt;margin:0 0 0 36pt;" class="MsoBodyTextIndent3"><span style="font-family:Symbol;"><span>·<span style="font:7pt 'Times New Roman';">         </span></span></span><span><font face="Arial">To provide advice for individual’s with their own career planning.</font></span></p>
<p><font face="Arial"><span>To help to promote and develop the tool across the </span><span>West Midlands</span><span> I would appreciate your comments on the Framework and also examples your experience of using the Framework.<span>  </span>If you would like to contribute to this discussion please add a comment to this page.</span></font></p>

<p style="text-indent:-18pt;margin:0 0 0 36pt;" class="MsoBodyTextIndent3"><span style="font-family:Symbol;"><span>·<span style="font:7pt 'Times New Roman';">         </span></span></span><font face="Arial"><span>We also intend to identify how any of the </span><span>West Midlands</span><span> learning and development initiatives and training fit into this framework as well as the Knowledge and Skills Framework.</span></font></p>
